Francis Wilby Carter - Paperhanger (K1896) Francis works for his father, Benjamin Howard Carter the builder (Nos 14-18 Victoria Street).
Francis is married to Barbara (nee Lay) whose family run a Grocery business at No 33 High Street. They have two sons: Wilby George (b 1884)and Reginald (b 1886) who, as 'Reg Carter' is to become a well known artist and cartoonist. Francis Wilby Carter - Paperhanger and decorator, dies this year. His wife, Barbara will continue to live here until her own death in 1933.

Reginald Carter has already begun to make a name for himself as a comic picture postcard artist, his first commission being at the age of 17. He has a studio built at the bottom of the garden and starts publishing his best-known postcard series: The Southwold Railway Cartoons. During the First War, he produces many more cards gently lampooning army life. He becomes a gunner RFA. (Source: as above)
